Scholarship Deadline July 1st
The Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association (APICDA) announces the availability of scholarships for the 2008-09 school year. Eligible applicants must meet one of the two residency requirements: 1. historical relationship to one of the following communities Atka, Akutan, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, St. George, or Unalaska or 2. at least five years current residency in one of the seven communities listed above. Applicants must be formally accepted at a college or university, plan to attend on a full-time basis, and maintain a 2.0 GPA or greater. Scholarships are awarded up to $2,500 per semester, depending on need. Completed application packets are due by July 1, 2008 Late applications will not be accepted.

Lessons from Bill Gates
Following our theme of student visits and graduates last May, here is some wisdom from one of America's most successful and wealth people. Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.
Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!
Rule 2 : The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Student Visit
Today the students from Akutan and False Pass visited our Anchorage office. The students just got back from traveling up to Denali and Fairbanks and are enjoying the nice weather in Anchorage before heading back home. Thanks for visiting! It was great to see all your smiling faces!

Secretary/Receptionist
APICDA Joint Ventures (AJV) is seeking a motivated self-starter for the position of Secretary/Receptionist. This full-time-permanent position is located in Downtown Anchorage, Alaska. AJV is a for-profit subsidiary of the Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association, (APICDA) a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation, whose purpose is to foster economic development in the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands based upon the seafood industry. AJV is an equal opportunity employer. Hiring preference is given to residents of the APICDA communities.
The Secretary/Receptionist manages the day to day operations of our office, provides clerical support to APICDA and AJV staff and works directly with the customers of our region and our adventure tourism clients.
Qualifications: The successful applicant will be punctual, have an outgoing personality, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, have a well groomed appearance, and the ability to receive and act upon direction from multiple supervisors. The applicant must have a strong secretarial background and the ability to work on a variety of special projects. Must be dependable, organized, learn quickly, and multi-task.
Specific skills required, but are not limited to; organizing staff travel to and from remote locations, familiarity with the internet, basic computer programs (Microsoft Office), email, and standard office equipment (phones, fax, copier, postage meter). A high school degree or equivalent is required.
Compensation: Hourly wage is DOE. The benefit package includes; health, dental, vision, and 401-K.
